Volvo S90 Discontinued Only 3 Months After Facelift Launch: Completed Against Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, And BMW 5-Series

In an intriguing development, Volvo has removed the S90, its premium sedan, from its portfolio in India. The current generation S90 underwent two facelifts: one in April of this year and the first in 2021. The S90 is no longer available for purchase, according to the Swedish automaker, which has removed it from its India website.

As a result, Volvo now only offers four vehicles in India: two models with internal combustion engines and one fully electric model. These comprise every SUV, including the XC40, XC90, EX40, and EC40. The last documented price of the domestically assembled S90 in India was Rs 68.25 lakh (ex-showroom). Volvo has not yet said whether or not the S90 will go back on sale.

Features include a 360-degree camera, a four-zone climate control system, an Android-based touchscreen infotainment system, a 19-speaker 1,400W Bowers & Wilkins audio system, massaging and ventilated front seats, an air purifier, and air suspension were all standard on the Volvo S90. The S90’s Level 2 advanced driver safety system included adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring, among other safety features.

A 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, 48V mild hybrid system, and an 8-speed automated transmission propelled the Volvo S90. This drivetrain produced a maximum torque of 350 Nm and 246 horsepower.

Globally, the redesigned Volvo S90 comes with a variety of powertrain choices, such as plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid. Earlier in March of this year, Volvo also introduced the S90’s all-electric counterpart. With its 106 kWh battery, the ES90 can go up to 700 kilometers between charges. Volvo’s dedication to EVs makes the ES90 a potential contender in the future, even though the company has not confirmed its introduction in India.

By the end of this year, Volvo plans to introduce the all-electric EX30 SUV in India. The Swedish automaker is even considering putting this model together domestically in India. Sometime next year, the E90 all-electric flagship SUV is probably going to follow.

Volvo India has removed the S90 premium vehicle from its portfolio due to its discontinuation. With an emphasis on the expanding SUV and EV markets, Volvo now has an all-SUV portfolio in India that includes the XC40, XC90, EX40, and EC40. Volvo emphasizes the upcoming EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs for the Indian market, so even if the S90 was feature-rich and locally produced, its global makeover and the debut of its all-electric ES90 equivalent in India are still uncertain.
