As part of simplifying their payments app, the tech giant, Google, has decided to discontinue Google Pay in the US. The Google Pay services, through the United States (US) version of the app will not be made available from June 4, 2024. The users can now use the Google Wallet instead of Google Pay, the tech company said. This transition from Google Pay to Google Wallet would be applicable only to the users of Google pay app in the US.

“Google Wallet continues to be the primary place for people to securely store payment cards used for tap and pay in stores, alongside other digital items like transit cards, driver’s licenses, state IDs and more. To simplify the app experience, the U.S. version of the standalone Google Pay app will no longer be available for use starting June 4, 2024. You can continue to access the most popular features — tapping to pay in stores and managing payment methods — right from Google Wallet, which is used five times more than the Google Pay app in the U.S.,” said Google, through its blog.

As part of making a smooth transition, Google has said that at places where Google Pay is normally used – “from checking out online to tapping and paying in stores — remains the same.” The transition is being undertaken only in the US and, as for the Google Pay app users in India and Singapore, Google said that things would remain the same.

Google Wallet is a digital wallet that allows payments, along with access to passes and tickets that the users store in it which are used for tap and pay. The app also securely stores IDs and cards.

In view of the changes being initiated, Google said that, “you can use the U.S. version of the Google Pay app until June 4, 2024 to view and transfer your Google Pay balance to your bank account. You can continue to view and transfer your funds to your bank account after June 4, 2024 from the Google Pay website.” It also added that, users “will no longer be able to send, request or receive money from others through the U.S. version of the Google Pay app.” More instructions have been given in their website. Android users can download the latest version of Google wallet from Google Play.

“We’ve invested in making payments as fast and seamless as possible — like improving Google Pay autofill in Chrome, making it easy to pay for public transit and expanding the types of passes you can store in Wallet. And looking ahead, we’ll continue improving payment experiences like these,” the website said.
