Interesting Story of the Domain
The saga of the Jio Hotstar domain name got social media as well as national media attention when the Delhi-based app developer decided to sell the domain’s ownership to fund his higher studies. The decision to sell the domain was announced days after Reliance Jio and The Walt Disney formally announced the merger of their media businesses.
Reportedly after the Reliance declined the developer’s offer, the Dubai-based siblings purchased jiohotstar.com from its registered owner, shifting the domain to the Gulf country, leaving many wondering about the domain’s future and the potential dealings of the Indian company with these overseas kids. The kids said they discussed the matter with their parents and, with their support, bought the site. After the domain transfer, users were redirected to a webpage showing the story of the UAE kids, explaining their stories, dreams and plans.

On November 15, the Dubai sibling had claimed that Indian conglomerate Reliance had approached them for acquiring the domain jiohotstar.com. In a statement, the kids said their journey with jiohotstar.com is coming to an end, adding that they believe the domain could be useful for Reliance. “There is no payment or deal involved. It’s purely our decision,” the statement said.
They said that Reliance’s legal team had approached them and requested that they visit Mumbai to finalize the agreement, and once it is signed, they will transfer the domain, and the website will be closed. Their siblings also highlighted that there was no pressure from anyone, noting that it is purely a transfer of the domain because it would be useful for Reliance.
