Amid increasing resentment among the youth due to unemployment and poor packages in India, Congress leader Pawan Khera today attacked the Modi government for the lower minimum wage in the country.

Citing a report by Velocity Global, the Congress spokesperson said that the wages in India are lower than those in Pakistan and Nigeria, leading to a very low standard of living for a significant population.

In a post on  X today,  Pawan Khera alleged that India is among the countries that pay their workers less than Pakistan and Nigeria, and the country tops the list of the 10 countries with the lowest wages globally.  Indian workers are earning just $45 a month on average, equivalent to around Rs 3500, said the Congress leader, adding that the minimum wage in Nigeria is $76 (Rs 6,351.25) and in Pakistan is $114 (Rs 9,526.88), showing a significant digits ahead.

Sharing an infographic of the data, the Congress leader wrote, “While Prime Minister Narendra Modi sells the dream of making India the 3rd-largest economy in terms of GDP growth, the reality is quite different.”

Noting that the wages of the Philippines are $128, Vietnam is $140, Ukraine  $177, Armenia $187 and Kazakhstan $188, the Congress leader claimed that even in smaller countries, the minimum wage is significantly higher.

Notably, the Congress had on Monday issued a statement, underlining the massive “unemployment and the abundance of low-quality employment” in the country. Sharing the unemployment report in the statement, the Congress leader in charge or communication Jairam Ramesh wrote that India’s labour markets are characterised by a dual tragedy “mass unemployment and an abundance of low-quality employment. Our statement on the self-anointed non-biological Prime Minister’s claim of having created 80 million job,” the Rajya Sabha MP added.

An odd statement by a BJP MLA from Madhya Pradesh on formal education had caused fury today, with Congress leaders such as Shashi Tharoor and Jairam Ramesh attacking the saffron party for its member’s remark. At an event on Monday, the BJP leader,  Pannalal Shakya, told students that nothing is going to happen with the degrees, asking them to open a motorcycle puncture repair shop to at least earn a livelihood instead.
