Emmett Shear, the new interim CEO of OpenAI, is reportedly threatening to leave the company if the board cannot provide the reason for former CEO and co-founder Sam Altman”s ouster. Bloomberg reported that Emmett Shear has asked the OpenAI board for proof of Sam Altman”s wrongdoing. Earlier, the majority of OpenAI employees signed a letter saying they may quit and join the ousted CEO at Microsoft unless the board resigns and reappoints Sam Altman.
Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that even the new CEO has been left in the dark in matters to Altman”s removal from OpenAI. The report also said that Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Amazon-owned Twitch, told people close to OpenAI that he is not planning to stick around if the board cannot clearly communicate the reason behind the former CEO”s sudden firing. On November 20, while announcing the new role, Emmett Shear also said that the process and communications around Sam Altman“s removal have been handled very badly and have seriously damaged OpenAI”s trust. In an X post, Emmett Shear also added that he will reform the OpenAI management and leadership team due to recent departures.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg also reported that OpenAI is still in negotiations with Sam Altman and that the company is making constant efforts to bring back the former CEO. The report suggests that the latest discussions are taking place between Sam Altman, interim CEO Emmett Shear, and Adam D”Angelo, a board member. Notably, on November 20, Satya Nadella announced that Microsoft is hiring Sam Altman to lead a new advanced artificial intelligence (AI) research team. However, it is still not clear whether Sam Altman is fully onboarded with Microsoft.
