Tata Steels UK has broached legal action against its employee union as they planned to halt working,  following the decision to shutdown of operations at the Port Talbot facility. The union called off their work and asked for a complete strike on July 8 in response to Tata Steel’s plans to close the blast furnaces earlier than anticipated. The union raised concerns and called it a “long line of threats” and affirmed that this won’t dissuade them. The Union informed Tata Steel’s top management to look into the issues and further resolve the conflicts with immediate action.

According to the reports, Tata Steel has now moved with legal support as the company is forced to adjudicate further complications. However, the company didn’t further disclose any details regarding this dispute. The company stated that they are forced to halt or pause heavy-end operations on the Port Talbot site if they confront issues on account of this unilateral strike. The company added that the closedown of operations costs an arm and a leg that would further be tumultuous to function through the supply chain.  Meanwhile, the company recommended calling off the strike and asked the Union to consider its support package, training and other benefits.

Union General Secretary Sharon Graham stated that the decision to shut the company before three months would affect each and everyone but it will not deter the employees from the strike. He also highlighted that the notion of this strike is to secure the long-term journey of steelmaking in the UK and explained that the union had been given serious investments from the labour department for the security of jobs. The statement draws the attention of the real decision-makers in Mumbai to initiate or further negotiate and construe that these investments will do good to the company and workers, Graham added.
