Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed optimism about the transformative potential of the upcoming ₹27,000 crore Tata semiconductor facility in Assam, following his meetings with top Tata Group executives, including Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata, in Mumbai.
Mr Sarma hailed the semiconductor project as a game-changer that would revolutionize the economic landscape of East India and elevate Assam”s global standing in the semiconductor industry. He conveyed heartfelt gratitude to Ratan Tata and Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekharan for their unwavering faith and commitment to investing in Assam.
During discussions with Tata leadership, Mr Sarma announced plans to establish a Skill Development Centre within the premises of the semiconductor facility in Jagiroad. The centre aims to empower youths from the North East by providing training in Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, and electronics, thereby facilitating job opportunities at the Jagiroad unit.
Mr Sarma highlighted ongoing efforts to skill Assamese youth, with 1,500 individuals, predominantly women, currently undergoing training at Tata facilities in Bangalore. These initiatives aim to position them for leadership roles once the semiconductor facility becomes operational in 2025.
The Assam Chief Minister held detailed discussions with Tata Projects and Tata Electronics regarding timelines, milestones, and key deliverables of the Jagiroad Semiconductor Testing and Assembly facility. Additionally, meetings with Tata Power and Tata Consumer Products Limited focused on investments in renewable energy, addressing Assam”s power requirements, and unlocking opportunities for the tea industry to enhance the Ease of Living for tea garden communities.

Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata expressed confidence in Assam”s potential and commended Sarma”s vision and support, acknowledging the partnership between the Assam government and the Tata Group in positioning Assam as a major player in sophisticated semiconductor manufacturing.
