Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Uber has signed an MoU to “explore an integration with the network to expand the range of mobility offerings on the Uber app,” Uber said. The agreement between Uber – the company which offers transportation and services, and ONDC, established by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade of Government of India as a non-profit private organisation, is expected to add more power to Uber’s aim of delivering safe, affordable and reliable transportation to Indians.
The MD & CEO of ONDC, T Koshy said, “as the Open Network is continuously evolving, MTT (Mobility, Transport and Travel) is certainly a critical sector for us. Different players together on the Network foster innovation and newer business models. Today’s MoU is a major step forward, and one we hope will enable a diverse range of mobility solutions to benefit every Indian.”
During an event at Bangaluru, Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber CEO, spoke with, Nandan Nilekani, Infosys Chairman on ‘Building Population Scale Technology.’ Mr Khosrowshahi, excited on the digital public infrastructure in India, said that, “companies and governments around the world can learn from India’s ambitious Digital Public Infrastructure,” and “as a technology company, Uber views open source tech stacks with a lot of interest and recognizes the opportunities they bring for everyone,” the Uber website said.
The MoU between Uber and ONDC, would serve Uber’s vision to fulfil the mobility needs of Indians, at the same time, it would be tallying with the ONDC objective of democratising digital commerce in India. Earlier, in September 2023, Uber had signed an MoU with Indian Navy to provide safe, reliable, convenient and economical mobility solutions for navy personnel and their families.
Uber started services in India in the 2013, over the last ten years, the company, with its innovations in technology has helped in the mobility needs of Indians as its app changed India’s transportation landscape with safe, reliable and affordable rides. It is spread over 125 cities covering different vehicle types. The company is also a job creator as it has enabled employment through driving, Uber website said.
