Popular micro-blogging platform X, previously known as Twitter, announced a new annual subscription plan of $1 to post content on the platform. The new subscription program, named “Not A Bot”, is in the testing stage, and presently it is applicable in two countries: the Philippines and New Zealand.
Billionaire Elon Musk”s X informed that existing users will not be affected by the new program and only new and verified accounts in New Zealand and the Philippines would have to pay a $1 annual subscription fee. “Starting today, we”re testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines. New, unverified accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription to be able to post & interact with other posts. Within this test, existing users are not affected,” X said in a post.

X says that the new subscription plan was created to improve the significant efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of platform and bot activity. A post on X”s Help Center page said that it is a potentially powerful measure to help the platform combat bots and spammers on X while balancing its accessibility with the small fee amount. The new plan will permit X users to carry out various actions on the web version of X. This includes liking posts, posting content, replying, reposting, and quoting other accounts” posts. At the same time, users who opt out of this subscription plan will only be able to perform “read-only” actions like reading posts, watching videos, and following accounts. X has not yet revealed whether they are planning to introduce the same method in other countries too.
