The Ministry of Education released All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2021-22. Since 2011, under AISHE, the ministry covers all Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in the country collecting detailed information on various parameters including student enrolment, teachers, infrastructural information etc.
The survey highlights the key observation on Indian education status with Male/Female enrolment, enrolment of students of Other Backward Castes (OBCs)/Schedule Tribes (STs)/Schedule Cates (SCs). According to the data revealed, the total enrolment in higher education has increased to nearly 4.33 crore in 2021-22 from 4.41 crore in 2020-21. An enrolment increments of 91 lakhs from 3.42 crore in 2014-15 is observed. The Female enrolment is up by 0.05 crore from 2020-21 to 2021-22.
The enrolment of Schedule Castes (SC) students got up by 44% to 66.23 lakh in 20121-22 in comparison to 46.07 lakh in 2014-15. The number of SC female students enrolled has climbed from 29.01 lakh in 2020–21 and 21.02 lakh in 2014–15 to 31.71 lakh in 2021–22. Between 2014 and 2015, there has been a 51% increase. The number of ST students enrolled rose from 16.41 lakh in 2014–15 to 27.1 lakh in 2021–2022. The number of ST female students enrolled grew from 12.21 lakh in 2020–21 and 7.47 lakh in 2014–15 to 13.46 lakh in 2021–22.

Additionally, the number of OBC students enrolled increased from 1.13 crore in 2014–15 to 1.63 crore in 2021–22. Enrolment of OBC students has increased significantly by around 50.8 lakh (45%) between 2014 and 2015. Enrolment for OBC female students increased from 52.36 lakh in 2014–15 to 78.19 lakh in 2021–2022.
The number of enrolled minority students rose by 38% from 21.8 lakh in 2014–15 to 30.1 lakh in 2021–2022. The number of enrolled female minority students increased by 42.3% from 10.7 lakh in 2014–15 to 15.2 lakh in 2021–22. In the North East States, there are 12.02 lakh students enrolled overall in 2021–2022, up from 9.36 lakh in 2014–2015. In the North East States in 2021–2022, there will be more female enrolment—6.07 lakh—than male—5.95 lakh.
According to the Gender Parity Index (GPI) for 2021–2022, the ratio of female to male GER is 1.01. Since 2017–18, the GPI has been over 1, meaning that for the sixth year running, female GER has outpaced male GER. According to responses from AISHE 2021–22, 12.1% of students are enrolled in postgraduate studies, while 78.9% of all students are engaged in undergraduate courses.
In AISHE 2021–22, the most students are enrolled in the arts discipline (34.2%), which is followed by science (14.8%), commerce (13.3%), and engineering and technology (11.8%). The majority of students enrolling in postgraduate programs in AISHE 2021–22 are in the social science stream (21.1%), followed by science (14.7%).
There are 1,168 universities and university-level institutions registered overall, 45,473 colleges, and 12,002 standalone institutes. Between 2014 and 2015, 341 universities and university-level institutions were founded. Survey shows that 4,470 colleges and 17 universities—14 of which are state public universities—are reserved solely for female students.
Availability of different infrastructural facilities in university in 2021-22 includes are Libraries (99%), Laboratories (88%), Computer centers (93%), Skill Development Centre (71%) and Play Ground (91%).
The survey shows that there were be 15.98 lakh faculty members and teachers in 2021–2022, with roughly 56.6% men and 43.4% women. The number of female faculty members and teachers increased by 22% from 5.69 lakh in 2014–15 to 6.94 lakh in 2021–22.
