India-Israel Partner To Establish New Water Technology Centre At IIT Madras

On Tuesday, India and Israel signed a joint statement to establish a Centre of Water Technology at IIT Madras, Chennai. The tripartite agreement was signed between the Embassy of Israel, IIT Madras, and the AMRUT mission of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The agreement shows a shared commitment to address the critical water management challenge in India.

To kickstart the initiative a capacity building course was organised by IIT Madras from August 5 to 8 2024 on ’24/7 Water Supply in Urban Areas’.

The Centre of Water Technology aims to become a hub for innovation, research, and capacity building in water technologies, with a special focus on sustainable solutions for urban water supply. Reportedly, the collaboration reflects the shared commitment of India and Israel to address the pressing challenges of water scarcity and management.

Israel is a strategic partner to India and a global leader in Integrated Water Resources Management.

The Embassy of Israel issued a statement mentioning that it remains committed to foster cooperation in water technology and management. The new centre expects to be a key contributor to India’s efforts to achieve a sustainable water supply to all.

The Centre of Water Technology works towards the mutual exchanges of technology, scientific information and literature. The CoWT will hold discussions and counsultation with the experts from both India and Israel to address the problems associated with drinking water and sewerage management and to develop new areas of intervention.

Both governments also intend to identify specific projects under Integrated water resource management, water and sewage recycling, IoT solution and online monitoring, water harvesting, smart data management and AI among other areas.
