What is the Dravidian Model?

The Dravidian Model is championed by Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu, particularly the DMK, which emphasizes social justice, regional autonomy, and the upliftment of marginalized communities.

The model is rooted in the early 20th-century Dravidian movement, which arose as a response to caste oppression, Brahminical dominance, and Hindi imposition in Tamil regions.

The model prioritizes reducing caste-based discrimination through reservations in education and employment, alongside extensive welfare programs like free education, healthcare, and subsidized food for the poor. It promotes rationalism and secularism, opposing religious orthodoxy and championing Tamil language and culture against perceived cultural imperialism. The Dravidian Model advocates for inclusive economic development that benefits marginalized groups, while also supporting greater state autonomy within India’s federal structure.

This ideology has significantly shaped Tamil Nadu’s social and political landscape, leading to improvements in literacy, healthcare, and gender equality across the state.
