Kerala Bans Sharing Of Study Material Via Social Media Platforms

The Kerala Directorate of Higher Secondary Education (DHSC) has banned the sharing of study materials through social media platforms such as WhatsApp. The decision was reportedly taken to ensure that the learning process remains classroom-centered and does not get diluted by external digital resources. The order prohibits sharing study material over social media and printing them afterward.

As per the Joint Director of Higher Secondary Academics, Suresh Kumar, the regional deputy directors have been tasked with holding regular inspections of schools to ensure the implementation of the new rules.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, digital learning was widely adopted and remained largely beneficial for students. However, now parents have raised concerns and filed formal complaints to the Child Rights Commission prompting the Directorate to re-evaluate the practice. Following the procedure, the principals of higher secondary schools have been instructed to ask teachers not to distribute notes via digital platforms, and rather encourage students to engage in more traditional methods of learning instead.

It is also argued that handwritten notes creates deeper engagement with the subject, give rise to improved memory, enhanced creativity, impoved focus, better organisatio of the thought process and personal touch to the collection of information by the students.
