National Mission For Mentoring Across India Awaits Education Ministry Approval

The National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) awaits Ministry of Education nod to roll out National Mission for Mentoring (NMM) Across India. NCTE has proposed the expansion the pool of mentor teachers from 60 to 1,000 under NMM.

“Among 60 selector mentors already assigned to provide mentorship, around 30 are Padma awardees. This is the first time that teachers are receiving mentorship support to augment their skills”, NCTE member secretary informed. He mentioned, “This program is not only enhancing the teaching abilities of the mentee teachers but also facilitating a culture of continuous learning, enabling teachers to stay updated and relevant in today’s educational landscape”.

National Mission for Mentoring (NMM), as envisaged in NEP 2020, is to creation a large pool of outstanding professionals willing to provide mentoring to school teachers and ensure their continuous professional development.

The mission found mention in the Budget 2021-22, later NCTE utilised Rs 1.28 crore to develop digital infrastructure to support the mission. NCTE drafted a National Mission for Mentoring-The Bluebook, a draft document, in July last year. “Once approved by MoE, the mission can be rolled out across the country”, an NCTE official responded.

Teachers mentoring areas include Instructional modules on Hindi and Mathematics in primary, middle and secondary sections, digital education and socio-emotional learning, learning and assessment methods for special needs Professionalism and Ethics, Classroom Management, Building 21st century skills, Art Integrated Pedagogy, Teacher’s Mental Health Engagement, Action Research Project and Interpersonal skills.

NCTE launched NMM in Pilot mode on 29th July 2022 in selected 30 Central Schools across the country. Nearly 700 mentee teachers have registered to seek training on the NMM portal.

“In 2023-24 union budget, Rs 1.56 crore were allocated which has not been fully utilised,” an official from NCTE said.
