A video showing high school girl students smashing a government vehicle on the school premises in Bihar has gone viral. The incident occurred at Girls High School, located in the Mahnar block of Vaishali district, where angry school students vandalised the Education Department Officer’s SUV (Mahindra Scorpio) as they were protesting over the lack of amenities in their school. The girls allege that there were no facilities in the classroom to sit and learn, and thereby they were forced to sit on the floor. Even after complaining innumerable times, according to the girls, the school administration showed negligence, which caused the protests.

As per several local media reports, the students blocked National Highway 122B, challenging inadequate seating facilities at the institution. Though local police reached the location and took the charge, the Free Press Journal reports that incidents citing cops slapping the students provoked girls to hurl stones at the vehicle of Bihar Education Officer (BEO), Ahilhya Kumar. The school administration, in turn, argues that students were influenced by external factors, which led to commotion and road blockages.

According to a senior police officer, the police have asked the students to stay calm when their demands are approved, but they turned aggressive and started throwing stones at the SUV. Free Press Journal adds that, according to the reports, Poonam Kumari, one of the police personnel who intervened, was injured during the clash.

While enquiring about the matter, Neeraj Kumar, Sub-Divisional Officer, Mahnar, Vaishali responded to ANI that the current condition of the classroom fails to accommodate all students. “There are more student admissions than the capacity of school classrooms here. The students who did not find a place to sit inside started protesting and blocked a road.”

“We are trying to run the school in two shifts,” he adds. Regarding the vandalism incident, Kumar adds that they are looking into the matter and the probe is on.
