Shimal School Cancels Eid Celebration Event After Threats From Hindutva Groups

A private school in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh had to cancel Eid celebrations after receiving threats from Hindutava organizations on Monday. As per the reports, Auckland House School was to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr on March 28, 2025.

Students of class II were asked to wear traditional dress for the celebration. Boys were to wear Kurta-Pajama with any small cap. Also, directions were given for the lunchbox. School asked students to bring Roti roll with paneer, Sevaiya and dry fruits for their lunchbox.

This reportedly sparked outrage from Hindutva organizations, such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Dev Bhoomi Sangarsh Samiti, which alleged that an attempt was “unfortunately” being made to promote Islam in Himachal Pradesh.

However, after getting pressure from the Hindutava outfits, Auckland House School principal informed parents about the cancellation of the event showing concerns over the safety of the children.

The message from the school administration read, “The safety and well being of our children and staff is our highest priority. The planned Eid-ul-fitr celebration for Classes Nursery to II was part of our effort to help young students appreciate Indian’s cultural diversity – just as we celebrated Holi, Diwali, and Christmas in school. It was intended purely as a cultural learning experience, with no religious ritual or enforcement and participation was entirely voluntary”.

Informaing about the cancellation of the even the school said, “In view of recent misrepresentation and concerns around potential disruption, the school has decided to withdraw the event in the interest of maintaining a peaceful and secure envrionment”.

Now students are asked to attende school in regular uniform.

Education Minister Rohit Thakur dismissed the claims of Hindutva groups, stating that the issue was being unnecessarily magnified to disturb social harmony. “Today itself, I became aware of this matter through media reports. We will confirm the details, as the school being named is a well-established, reputed convent institution here. Himachal Pradesh is known for its communal harmony and goodwill, and we will ensure that this remains intact,” he said.
