Mandi, Himachal Pradesh: Massive devastation unfolded across Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district after a series of overnight cloudbursts triggered flash floods, landslides, and property destruction, leaving at least one person dead, 18 missing, and 41 rescued as of Tuesday morning, officials confirmed.

The worst-hit area is Karsog subdivision, where a cloudburst late Monday night swept through homes and infrastructure. One person was confirmed dead, and multiple homes were damaged. Torrential rains that began late on June 30 have continued unabated, complicating rescue and relief efforts across the state.

In Kuklah, flash floods reportedly swept away 10 houses and a bridge, leaving a trail of debris and stranded residents. In Riki village, a family of seven was rescued and moved to safety. Meanwhile, Jayuni Khad, a tributary of the Beas River, turned violent in Sianj Panchayat (Seraj Assembly constituency), washing away at least two houses and leaving nine people missing, as per reports.

In the Dharampur subdivision, floodwaters damaged homes and cowsheds in Syathi village. No casualties have been reported from that area so far, but structural losses are significant.

Rescue Operations in Full Swing

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), supported by the district administration, has evacuated 41 people from multiple high-risk zones, including 16 individuals (12 children and 4 women) from Karsog, 14 from Raghunath ka Padhar, and 11 from Purani Mandi, where a sudden surge in the Beas River, due to dam gate operations, triggered an emergency.

Infrastructure in Shambles: Roads, Schools Closed

Landslides have blocked key arteries, including the Kiratpur-Manali highway between Mandi and Kullu, stranding commuters in tunnels overnight. Volunteers from the district administration have been distributing food and water to the stranded while vehicular movement from Mandi towards Kullu has been suspended for safety reasons. Heavy rainfall continues, hampering efforts to restore road connectivity.

In light of the hazardous situation, Mandi District Magistrate Apoorv Devgan has ordered closure of all schools and educational institutions across the district for July 1, as a precautionary measure.
