The new circular of University Grant Commission (UGC) circular dated January 18, 2024 has clarified concerns regarding the arrears of Doctoral and Post-Doctoral fellows.
UGC has encouraged post-doctoral and doctoral research scholars to request payment of their dues through a public notice. Fellows and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) may file claims for unpaid balances, including pre- and revised fellowships, housing rent allowances, and contingencies, period up to December 2023.
Submissions on the Scholarship Fellowship Management Portal (SFMP) are accepted till February 8, 2024. The UGC will not accept any claims for the period after the aforementioned date.
When applicable, the housing rent allowance will be calculated as a percentage of the fellowship amount using the updated rates effective from January 1, 2023. Last year, UGC has revised the fellowship amounts for the research fellows in science and humanities for the existing beneficiaries.
While the Junior Research Fellowship amount was increased from Rs 31,000 per month for two years to Rs 37,000 per month, the Senior Research Fellowship amount was increased to Rs 42,000 per month for the remaining period up from Rs 35,000.
Other fellowship hikes were also made and it includes Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship for Single Girl Child, Dr DS Kothari Post Doctoral Fellowship (DSKPDF) and post-doctoral fellowship for women.
It should be noted that Canara Bank has been appointed by UGC as the Nodal agency for awarding fellowships and scholarships in accordance with the regulations.
