India celebrates the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan as it”s National Teachers’ Day or Shikshak Divas on September 5 of every year. The day is a tribute to his contributions and achievements as well as to appreciate the efforts of present day teachers.

Why the day is celebrated?

September 5 is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of late Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the country’s first Vice President and former President. He was a scholar, philosopher, and Bharat Ratna awardee. He was born on September 5 1888.

History

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (5 September 1888 – 17 April 1975) was an Indian politician, philosopher, and statesman who served as the second president of India from 1962 to 1967. He previously served as the first vice president of India from 1952 to 1962.

He was the second ambassador of India to the Soviet Union from 1949 to 1952 and was also the fourth vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1939 to 1948 and the second vice-chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 1936.

When he was approached by his students to seek permission to celebrate September 5 as a special day, he requested them to observe it as Teachers” Day to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of teacher to the society. “Teachers should be the best minds in the country”, he reportedly said then.

Celebrations and Significance

The day has been observed across schools, colleges, universities, and all other educational institutions to respect and value the efforts made by the teachers for the upcoming generations. On the day, students and teachers may engage and celebrate in various activities and performances.

The day is an excellent opportunity for students to acknowledge and express gratitude towards their teachers.

National / State Awards for Teachers

On this day Central as well as State government”s honours best teachers of the nation/state with awards and accolades. National Award to Teachers are awarded by the President of India, and is arranged by the Federal Ministry for Education. It”s purpose is to celebrate the unique contribution of some of the finest teachers in the country and to honor those teachers who through their commitment and industry have not only improved the quality of school education but also enriched the lives of their students.
