Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Kabir Shankar Bose in the Sreerampur constituency to face the TMC candidate and his former father-in-law, Kalyan Banerjee.

The son-in-law’s candidateship in Sreerampur has struck a raw nerve at the three-time MP and close aid to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Being confident of winning the seat, Banerjee during the election campaign has said that he would win the fourth term in Lok Sabha, which would make him the longest-serving MP of Sreerampur so far.

When Banerjee took out the personal issues for election campaigns, Kabir Shankar Bose avoided discussing the matters on the campaign trail.

Armed with a law degree from the UK’s Nottingham University and awarded the title of Barrister-at-Law by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, London in 2007, along with an MBA from Switzerland, the 40-year-old Bose is a practicing counsel in the Supreme Court. Though he is a resident of New Delhi, he is an enrolled voter of Kasturba Nagara and this is not the first time Kabir is contesting election in West Bengal.

The saffron party has earlier fielded Kabir in the Srerampore assembly constituency in the 2021 state elections. But he lost to Trinamool’s Dr Sudipto Roy by over 23,000 votes.

In January 2021, the two cases against the BJP leader were stayed by the apex court. The two criminal cases were charged by Srerampur Police for allegedly attacking and molesting Trinamool Congress workers in December 2020. His lawyer argued in court that the charges were fabricated by his former father-in-law.

However, Trinamool Congress’s Mamata Banerjee has strong confidence in the 66-year-old candidate Kalyan Banerjee, who is not just a key political ally but also her next-door neighbor in Kolkata’s Kalighat.
