The Congress’ 38-year-old candidate is making her electoral debut against the BJP’s seasoned politician, who represented the seat from 2014 to 19. Notably, Pooja is the wife of former Mulana MLA and sitting Ambala MP Varun Chaudhary, who vacated his assembly seat after becoming an MP in the recently held Lok Sabha elections. Varun won the 2019 assembly elections from Mulana with a simple majority, defeating the BJP’s Rajbir Singh.
The battle has assumed national significance in the Mulana as both the BJP and Congress fielded female candidates, and given that the seat had elected its first woman MLA in 2014 when Sarwan emerged victorious on BJP ticket.
his is also the first time in the electoral history of Mulana assembly segment that both BJP and Congress have fielded woman candidates.

Congress’ debutant is a law graduate from Punjab University. Pooja has cited her occupation as a petrol pump owner in her affidavit submitted before the Election Commission. She has a total of Rs 20 crore worth of assets, including land and other inherited properties. BJP’s Sarwan has submitted that she owns Rs 10 crore assets.
The 69-year-old Sarwan was first elected on a Congress ticket in 1991 before later joining the BJP and winning Mulana constituency in 2014 on the saffron ticket.

Noting that she does not want to count the work she has done during her terms as an MLA, Sarwan said the development would continue the top agenda. She alleged the rival Pooja was from the political dynasty Chaudhary family, stating that the family is hungry for power. Noting Varun Chaudhary, who vacated the seat as an MLA to be MP and brought his wife in his place, the BJP former MLA said he betrayed the people for more power. Notably, Mulana constituency is a stronghold of the Chaudhary family, since it was first won by Varun Chaudhary’s father in 1972.
Pooja is banking on the development, and she has accused the Modi government of ignoring women’s safety. She also raised youth issues, including paper leaks and corruption.
