The endorsement of the former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag for Haryana Congress candidate Anirudh Chaudhary from family-centered Tosham seat in has surprised many ahead of state assembly elections scheduled for October 5.
Giving added political leverage to the Congress party, Sehwag says the reason he supported the party candidate was his close association with the Anirudh’s father when the later served as a BCCI chief.

After seeking public support for the Congress candidate, the former India opener said he considered Anirudh his elder brother, as his father, Ranbir Singh Mahendra, had supported the cricketer when served as BCCI president. “This is one of the most important days for him, and I feel I would be able to help him. I urge the people of Tosham to help Anirudh Chaudhary win,” Sehwag said.
The cricketer supported Congress candidate who is vying against BJP’s Shruti Choudhr, the daughter of the Bhartiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Kiran Chaudhry. A family legacy seat, Tosham has been represented by Kiran Chaudhry since 2005 as a Congress MLA, and she is notably the daughter-in-law of former Haryana Chief Minister Chaudhry Bansi Lal. Both the mother and daughter were in Congress, and they switched to the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.

Son of former BCCI president Ranbir Mahendra, the 48-year-old Anirudh Chaudhary is also the grand son of four-time Haryana chief minister Bansi Lal, making the contest a family legacy and political rivalry in Tosham constituency.
However, Sehwag’s backing for the Congress candidate has potentially added advantage in the closely contested constituency. Anirush is determined to secure the seat, which the grand old party has been able to retain for more than two decades.
Speaking about his prospect, the Congress candidate says he was cent per cent sure that Congress will emerge victorious “because the current (BJP) government has failed to solve the problems faced by farmers.”
