Tamil Nadu ruling political party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) today filed a complaint with the Election Commission over Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje“s remark on Tamil Nadu people in connection with the March 1 blast incident at the Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru.

The complaint filed by the DMK said that the Union Minister alleged Tamil people as behind the Bengaluru café blast, noting that the National Investigation Agency is yet to identify the culprit and the “investigation is underway.”

“The statement attempts to promote the feeling of enmity and hatred between the people of Karnataka and the people of Tamil Nadu,” the complaint stated, noting that the allegations were grave and a blatant violation of the Model Code of Conduct among other violations under different sections. The complaint asked the Election Commissioner to take appropriate action against the union Minister Shobha Karandlaje.

The Union Minister sparked controversy by slamming Karnataka congress government claiming that the people from Tamil Nadu come to the state”s IT city and planted bombs there. The comment invoked sharp criticism against the BJP leader and minister who was later forced to issue a statement apologising to the people of Tamil Nadu. The minister in her post on X asked for forgiveness and stated that she “retracted her previous comment.”

“To my Tamil brothers & sisters, I wish to clarify that my words were meant to shine light, not cast shadows. Yet I see that my remarks brought pain to some – and for that, I apologize. My remarks were solely directed towards those trained in the Krishnagiri forest, linked to the Rameshwaram Cafe blast. To anyone from Tamil Nadu affected, From the depths of my heart, I ask your forgiveness. Furthermore, I retract my previous comments.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin slamming the union minister asked the election commission to initiate appropriate legal action against the BJP MP for causing a threat to peace, harmony and national unity.
