The sitting MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla is the Congress candidate in the Amritsar constituency for 2024 Lok Sabha election. As a sitting MP, he has been representing the constituency since 2017. His first win was through a by-election following the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh from the parliament seat to contest the Punjab assembly election.
In 2019 Lok Sabha election, even though Aujla did not receive adequate support from major state Congress leaders, he still could win the seat again, by defeating BJP senior leader and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Through the past two comfortable wins, he built a stronghold in the constituency.
In 2017, Aujla”s victory in the Amritsar Lok Sabha by-poll was seen as a significant win for the Congress party, since it reaffirmed their stronghold in the region. Aujla, a seasoned politician with a strong grassroots connect, was able to garner widespread support from the voters in Amritsar. The by-poll results also highlighted the diminishing influence of the BJP in the region, as Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina”s defeat by a margin of almost 2 lakh votes, indicated a lack of support for the party in Amritsar.
Despite putting up a strong fight, Chhina was unable to match Aujla”s popularity and appeal among the voters and the AAP’s performance were also not good in the constituency.
The seat was earlier represented by Captain Amarinder Singh who had defeated the former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in a high profile battle during the 2014 general election.
