India's Richest Woman, Former MLA Savitri Jindal Contests From Hisar As Independent Candidate

Chairperson of OP Jindal Group Savitri Jindal’s nomination as an independent candidate from Haryana’s Hisar constituency has stirred discussions, noting the candidate’s name in the Forb’s ranking of her as India’s richest woman this year.

With a net worth of 29.1 billion USD, Savitri, the former Congress MLA and BJP’s Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal’s mother filed her nomination as an independent after the saffron party denied its ticket to her. According to the former MLA, she decided to pacify her supporters who were upset over the party’s move, saying that she had to obey their wishes as they were her “family.”

“I can’t say ‘no’. To honour their feelings, I will certainly contest the election,” said Savitri, whose son is currently a BJP MP from the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency. It was ahead of the recently held Lok Sabha elections that the mother and her son quit the grand old party to join the BJP.

However, the 74-year-old India’s richest woman’s nomination has made the battle in the constituency, which the BJP’s Kamal Gupta has been representing since 2014, significant. Savitri, who represented Hisar as Congress MLA twice and has served as a minister also, has asserted that the Jindal family has always served Hisar, underscoring that she is fully dedicated to living up to the expectations of the people and maintaining their trust.

The other candidates, including Congress’ Ram Niwas Rara, BJP’s Kamal Gupta, and AAP’s Sanjay Satrodia, have filed their nominations from Hisar. The Congress had a solid support base, and the party is trying to regain the constituency, which it lost to the BJP in 2014.

The Haryana assembly elections will be held on October 5, and the result will be declared on October 8.
