Following the uproar after Karnataka BJP MP Anantakumar Hegde made a remark on amending the Indian Constitution, the BJP”s Lok Sabha candidate from Nagpur, Jyoti Mirdha, has stated that the party aims to change the Constitution. Mirdha can be heard saying that the party needs to secure a majority in the Rajya Sabha to make changes to the Constitution.
In the video clip, Mirdha says, “We have to make several tough decisions for the sake of the country, and for that, we have to make changes in the constitution. To amend the constitution, as many of you know, we need a majority in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.” She goes on to say that the BJP and NDA enjoy a good majority in the lower house. However, the party does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and called out the party. He said, “After Anant Hegde let the cat out of the bag, BJP leaders hastily stuffed it back in and dropped him from their candidate list. Now another BJP candidate openly says the BJP’s aim is to change the Constitution. How many more candidates can the BJP disavow for revealing the truth?”

Mirdha’s comments follow Hegde’s similar remarks on the saffron party amending the constitution once it achieved a two-thirds majority in the upper house. His remarks stirred up a political controversy after he said that the Congress party has fundamentally altered the Constitution by including “unnecessary things,” citing examples of laws that “subjugate the Hindu community.”
Following Mr. Hegde’s remarks, the party distanced itself from the Karnataka MP, stating that the party will uphold the Constitution and that Hegde’s remarks “are his personal views.” The opposition also slammed the party over its members’ comments. After intense criticism, the party decided to drop Mr. Hegde and replace him with six-time MLA Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri to contest from the Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha seat.
Notably, Hanuman Beniwal’s Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) appealed to the Election Commission of India and subordinate offices in the state to cancel the nomination of Jyoti Mirdha, accusing her of concealing her criminal records in her election affidavit, reported the Times of India.
According to the newspaper, two cases registered against Mirdha at the Udai Mandir police station in Jodhpur were allegedly not disclosed.
