Mathura Prasad Mahato is the candidate for Jharkhand”s Giridih Lok Sabha seat under the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the INDIA alliance.
Mathura Prasad Mahato is currently serving as an MLA from the Tundi Assembly constituency. Prior to this, he served as an MLA in 2005 and 2009. Besides, he served as a cabinet minister in Jharkhand legislative assembly and handled the portfolio”s revenue and land reforms. As per the reports, Mahato”s influence over cadre votes confirmed his candidacy in the Lok Sabha polls.
Giridih constituency covers Bokaro, Dhanbad, and Giridih districts, and it comprises six assembly segments: Giridih, Dumri, Gomia, Bermo, Tundi, and Baghmara.
Currently, the parliamentary constituency is represented by All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) leader Chandra Prakash Choudhary. In the 2019 elections, he defeated JMM candidate Jagarnath Mahto by a margin of 248347 votes. In the upcoming polls, Chandra Prakash Choudhary is seeking a second term, and AJSU is in alliance with the NDA. Giridih is the only parliamentary seat in which AJSU is contesting in the state.
Both Chandra Prakash Choudhary and Mathura Prasad Mahato belong to the Kurmis community.
As the Lok Sabha election will be held seven phases across the country, in Jharkhand it is held in four phases on May 13, May 20, May 25 and June 1. The election for Giridih parliamentary seat falls on May 25 (phase 6). In the previous Lok Sabha polls, BJP-led NDA has won 12 seats in Jharkhand where the saffron party has won 11. Meanwhile, JMM and Congress received one seat.
