Now, Congress Government In Rajasthan Announces Caste Survey

The Congress government in Rajasthan issued an order yesterday, announcing a caste-based survey in the state. This move is significant because assembly elections are scheduled to be held in the state by the end of this year, and the dates will be announced by the central election body soon. Rajasthan will become the second state in the country to undertake such an exercise, with Bihar being the first, which released the caste survey results on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi”s birthday.

The order was issued by Ashok Gehlot-led Rajasthan government”s Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, and the survey will be conducted using the state”s resources to collect various socio-political indicators of different groups within the state. The survey will gather information and statistics to the social, economic, and educational levels of all its citizens in the state.

The nodal department responsible for the caste survey will be Rajasthan government”s Department of Planning (Economic and Statistics).

Congress party said Rahul Gandhi took the demand by the OBC delegations who had met him when Bharat Jodo Yatra was in Rajasthan. “During that time the OBC delegation had specifically raised the demand for caste census. Rahul Gandhi took his words very seriously,” Congress” communication in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh wrote on X.

He said the the move will especially help in making policies for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, and added that the survey is also very important to ensure social justice and population-based distribution of benefits.

“The question is why such initiatives are not being taken in any BJP ruled state and why is the Prime Minister silent on the issue of caste census?,” Mr Jairam Ramesh asked.
