Indore has been a BJP bastion for 35 years. When Congress fielded a new face, Akshay Bam, incumbent MP Shankar Lalwani was the BJP”s choice in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Shankar Lawani also serves as a member of the Standing Committee on Urban Development.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Shankar Lalwani won the seat by defeating Congress rival Pankaj Sanghvi by a margin of 5,47,754 votes. Lalwani, the lone Sindhi community MP, was one of the most polled politicians in the previous Lok Sabha polls. Though Congress has filed a poll code violation case against Shankara Lalwani in relation to the 2019 elections, the Indore district court absolves him of charges by allowing “the benefit of doubt.”

Before taking responsibility as a parliamentarian, Shankar Lalwani held several positions, including that of Corporator of the Municipal Corporation of Indore, PWD Chairman of the Municipal Corporation of Indore, and Chairperson of the Municipal Corporation of Indore. Lalwani became chairperson of the Indore Development Authority when BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan was chief minister.

Shankar Lalwani”s career began as a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) associate, and over the past three decades, he has championed the interests of the Sindhi community. Besides, for the last 25 years, he fought for advancing Indian citizenship to migrant Sindhis from Pakistan.

As the BJP MP worked to get approvals for several flyovers to ease traffic difficulties in Indore city, he is now being called the “Flyover Man.” Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan gave him the title.

Since 1989, Indore parliamentary constituency has been voting in favour of the BJP; former Lok Sabha speaker and veteran BJP leader Sumitra Mahajan won the seat eight consecutive times between 1989 and 2014. The saffron party holds all eight assembly constituencies under the Indore parliamentary constituency. The party is hoping for nothing but a comfortable win in the Indore seat.
