Aavesham Review: Fahadh Faasil’s Celebration Of His Acting Prowess

Written by Nadeer Ashraf

In Aavesham, Fahadh Faasil enters into the movie a bit late but owns the movie till the last moment as he unleashes a quirky, tempered, funny and character full of life gangster Ranga. At times, you see a crying Ranga on screen, then a fiery Ranga, then a lost in emotions Ranga… all the moment it is Fahadh Faasil living through the character. In fact, Fahadh never disappoints.

Aavesham the movie, helmed by Romancham director Jithu Madhavan, is about three boys from Kerala reaching Bangalore to pursue graduation and their experience with the local gangster Ranga, portrayed by Fahadh Fazil.

This must the first film the talented actor is donning a character in which he goes out and fights hundreds of people like mass heroes do. But, though the movie is about the life of a gangster, it is not completely about the fights and killings.

Fahadh’s acting has shades from his Aloshi from Iyyobinte Pusthakam, Joji from Joji, the thief from Thondimuthalum Drisakshiyum, Shammi from Kumbalangi Nights and Mahesh from Maheshinte Prathikaram.

Jithu Madhavan does not leave his signature style of showcasing real life stories with a niche. Like in Romancham, in Aavesham as well, the young director keeps the energy of Bangalore alive and the life of the city enduring. Relatability and the realistic portrayal of the real life conditions of small town boys in Romancham were the major reasons for the success of his first movie while the funny and sarcastic take on the life of a gangster make Aavesham different for the promising director.

One important element in the movie that helps the director to seamlessly execute a predictable story to an engaging movie is the writing. The detailed characterisation of the supporting cast, especially of Ranga’s henchman Amban (Sajin Gopu of Romancham and Churuli fame) and three boys (Hipster as Aju, Roshan Shanavas as Shantan and Midhun Jaishankar as Vipin) whom the story is centered around facilitate the movie to spread its wings as and when the plot gets loose.

Aavesham is a celebration of all the capabilities of Fahadh Faasil he has shown with the powerful roles he did in last one decade. The movie will definitely expand the reach of the already exploding Malayalam movies like Bhramayugam, Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham and Premalu.

Go and watch Aavesham to see Fahadh Faasil sketching an interesting character with extreme range.
