Akshay Kumar On Mohanlal’s Barroz: “I’m Waiting To See My Daughter’s Reaction”

At the Hindi trailer launch of the fantasy film Barroz, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar joined Malayalam cinema icon Mohanlal, expressing his admiration for the project. Akshay, clearly impressed by the film’s premise and execution, shared his excitement, particularly about seeing how his daughter would react to it.

“This is a pure 3D film and such projects for children are rare in India,” said Akshay. “Mohanlal sir keeps telling me he’ll arrange a trial show, but I’d rather watch it in theatres. It’s a wonderful film and an incredible experience waiting to happen. I’m especially looking forward to my daughter’s reaction. When she’s happy, I’m happy!”

The trailer launch event, held in Mumbai, also saw Mohanlal engaging with the media about his foray into directing, the evolution of Malayalam cinema, and his collaboration with Bollywood stalwarts like Priyadarshan.

Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure marks Mohanlal’s directorial debut, an ambitious fantasy film based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel. The story revolves around Barroz, a guardian of Vasco da Gama’s treasure, tasked with entrusting it to da Gama’s rightful descendant. Mohanlal plays the titular character, joined by an ensemble cast that includes Maya, Cesar Lorente Raton, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Tuhin Menon, and Guru Somasundaram.

The project faced significant delays, starting in 2019 but grappling with COVID-19 disruptions. Originally scripted by Punnoose, the screenplay underwent revisions, with Mohanlal and T. K. Rajeev Kumar crafting the final version. The film boasts cinematography by the legendary Santosh Sivan and was shot extensively in Kochi, Goa, Bangkok, and Chennai.

Post-production spanned two years, incorporating cutting-edge visual effects under Brynley Cadman’s supervision. The soundtrack, a blend of Lydian Nadhaswaram’s compositions and Portuguese fado influences, adds depth to the film’s maritime and mythical themes.
