Former lead singer of Bangladeshi rock band Miles, Shafin Ahmed died in the US today. He was under treatment at a hospital in Virginia after the singer suffered a cardiac arrest. The 63-year-old Shafin was at a concert in Virginia when he underwent a heart attack. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he could not recover.
The music group’s keyboard player Manam Ahmed said that Shafin had been struggling with heart issues and had previously undergone an angioplasty, adding that the singer was also suffering from kidney-related troubles.

Shafin’s mother is the legendary singer Firoza Begum and his father is renowned musician Kamal Dasgupta. Influenced by the family, Shafin began his musical journey early, learning classical music from his parents.
He went to England for higher studies, which sparked his interest in Western music, turning him to band music.
It was in 1979 that the iconic singer joined Miles, earning fame as a lead singer, songwriter, and bassist in the band. During the 80s and ’90s, Shafin’s band music had rocked the Bengali music industry. He appeared on all of the albums of Miles while composing and writing many of their top hits. The album, Protisruti, released 1991 by the Miles became a huge sensation among the youth. Songs such as Chand Tara Surjo Nou Tumi, Jala Jala Jala Ei Ontore and Phiriye Dao were some of his evergreen works.
