As the industry is celebrating the 27th anniversary of JP Dutta’s cult film Border (1997), Sunny Deol has dropped a major announcement on the return of the Indian soldier “fauji” with the sequel which is set to be “India’s biggest war film,” Border 2.
The all-time blockbuster hit Border, had a final domestic net total of Rs 394 million. Since its release, Border has carved its place as an iconic film in the history of Hindi cinema. Sharing the exciting announcement, Deol posted a video on his X (formerly known as Twitter) handle and in no time, it went viral.

In the video shared by the legendary actor, the caption read, “Ek fauji apne 27 saal purane waade ko pura karne, aa raha hai phirse. India’s biggest war film, #Border2. (A soldier is coming again to fulfill his 27 years old promise).”
The Gadar 2 actor said, “27 saal pehle ek fauji ne vada kiya tha ki vo vapas aayega. Ussi vaade ko poora karne, Hindustan ki mitti ko apna salaam kehne, aa raha hai (27 years ago, a soldier made a promise that he would return. To fulfill that promise, to salute the soil of India, he is coming).

Directed by Anurag Singh, the sequel will be produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar (under the T-series banner), JP Dutta and Nidhi Dutta (via JP Films). Interestingly another report by Pinkvilla claimed that the makers are planning to release Border 2 on Republic Day in 2026. “Border 2 is targeting to hit the big screen on Friday, January 23, 2026 – leading to the Republic Day holiday on Monday, January 26, 2026. Being a film celebrating the bravery of Indian Armed Forces, the makers feel that there is no better date than Republic Day for the arrival of this Sunny Deol and Ayushmann Khurrana film,” an insider revealed.
With three National Film Awards for it, best film on national integration, best lyricist, and best playback singer (male) for Hariharan, Border followed the events of Battle of Longewala during the 1971 India-Pakistan War. Released on June 13, 1997, the classic also starred Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Tabu, Jackie Shroff, Puneet Issar, Pooja Bhatt, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, among others.
The blockbuster hit also gave classic hits with lyrics by Javed Akhtar and Anu Malik’s composition. Songs such as Ae Jaate Hue Lamhon, Sandese Aate Hain, and Mere Dushman, Mere Bhai, continue to be cherished by fans.
