After two months of facing scrutiny and ongoing legal obligations, BTS member Suga received a court sentence for driving under the influence (DUI) in August. The popstar has been fined 15 million won by the Seoul court.

According to the reports, the Seoul Court issued a summary order imposing a fine of 15 million KRW (about $11,500USD) on the Korean singer. In South Korea, a summary order is typically issued for less severe cases. If Suga wishes to contest the order, he has seven days to request a formal trial.

The incident took place on August 6, 2024, when the K-pop singer fell while riding an electric scooter while intoxicated. The Seoul Yongsan police station said that they booked Suga for violating the Road Traffic Act. A breathalyzer test revealed his blood alcohol concentration to be 0.227 percent, significantly higher than the 0.08 percent threshold that results in license revocation in Korea.

Following the incident, Suga issued a public apology in the band’s official social media handle. “I am very heavy-hearted and apologetic to bring you disappointing news. After drinking at a dinner yesterday night, I rode an electric scooter home. I violated the Road Traffic Act due to my complacent thinking that it was a short distance and my failure to recognise that using an electric scooter while intoxicated was prohibited,” read the apology.

The singer further revealed that his license had been revoked. “I fell while parking the scooter in front of my house, and the nearby police officer conducted a breathalyzer test, resulting in the cancellation of my license and a fine. Although there were no victims or damaged facilities in this process, it is entirely my responsibility without any excuse, and I sincerely apologise to everyone,” he said.
