Good Bad Ugly
Backed by Mythri Movie Makers, Good Bad Ugly promises to be a fun and no-holds-barred ride that deals with the story of a ruthless but retired gangster. When his son is kidnapped, the gangster returns to a world of violence, bloodshed, and bullets and meets a younger generation of gangsters. Invariably, this means the younger gang has to be reminded of who the OG is, and the director uses this opportunity to introduce the legacy of AK to the current generation.
The gangster roles of Ajith Kumar in films like Dheena (2001), Billa (2007), Asal (2010), and Mankatha (2011), among others, hold a separate fanbase. Revisiting the terrified gangster era of the actor, GBU has some nostalgic moments from these films.
Reference 1: Varalaru
As the trailer starts with the antagonist Arjun Das introducing AK, it shows glimpses of the actor’s previous films like Billa and Varalaru. Moreover, Arjun’s character also stresses the title of Ajith’s 2006 blockbuster, Varalaru, saying, “Oh, you are a big villain? I can see your varalaaru (history);” even though it seems cheeky, it will drive the audience crazy in theatres.
Reference 2: Mankatha
One such notable reference is that Trisha, talking about Mankatha and how Ajith’s character threw her father out of a moving car right in front of her eyes. Even though the reference is used to define a wholly different context, it sparks an instant smile among the audience, reminding them of Ajith’s 2011 action thriller.
Also, the primary antagonist of Good Bad Ugly, Arjun Das, uses the iconic dialogue, “It’s my f**king game,” uttered by Ajith in Mankatha.
Reference 3: Billa
Actor Prabhu’s reunion with AK is another nostalgic reference to the duo’s 2007 film Billa. Sprinkling the flavors of director Vishnuvardhan’s action entertainer, Adhik has filled the film with enough car chases and other iconic moments that will build the hype.
Reference 4: Dheena
In the flashback sequences, we also see references to multiple films of Ajith Kumar that established him as the “Thala” of Tamil cinema. The crucial dialogue of the actor in the jail sequence is an iconic one from his 2001-released film Dheena, paying tribute to the early 2000s gangster.
Notably, the scorpion pendant, which Ajith wears in GBU, is another reference that connects his character with the OG Don Dheena.

Another unmissable factor of the film is the cameo by actress Simran. Ajith and Simran, the duo who delivered blockbusters like Aval Varuvala (1998), Vaali (1999), and Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuven (2000), will be reuniting after 25 years through this action thriller. Notably there’s the iconic chewing gum scene from the 1999 film.
