Director Magizh Thirumeni, known for his action thriller genre, has created very few films throughout his career, spanning 15 years. The director has acquired a special place in the Tamil film industry, not for the numbers but for his rooted storytelling.

Magizh Thirumeni—A Director with Patience

Unlike the other renowned makers, Magizh Thirumeni has delivered only five films throughout a 15-year career. Let me remind you of those impactful directorials of Thirumeni, which might have blown your minds. His works include Mundhinam Paartheney (2010), Thadaiyara Thaaka (2012), Meaghamann (2013), Thadam (2019), and Kalaga Thalaivan (2022).

Apart from being a renowned director with a very few number of films to boast of, he is a director who finishes the film within time. When asked about him delivering only six films (including his upcoming) in his entire 15-year career, Thirumeni explained that it takes six to eight months for him to complete a script, and then it takes its time to complete the production.

He is a filmmaker who believes that every story takes its own time, and a creator should offer the time required for its making. Whether it comes to scripting, actors, or production, a filmmaker should offer the required time. Thirumeni also believes that this is the factor that gave life to Vidaamuyarchi as well.

Thirumeni and his Love for Literature

More than a filmmaker, Thirumeni is an avid reader of Tamil and Russian literature. If you are a close observer of the director, you might have experienced the impact of his eloquence in Tamil. It is also to be noticed that the characters sketched by the director often reflect his love for the language. His directorial journey started with scriptwriting and novels, which eventually drove him towards filmmaking.

Mundhinam Paartheney: Beginning of the Director’s Journey

He entered the film fraternity in the early 2000s as an assistant director. Director Kasthuri Raja signed on Thirumeni to work on his son Selvaraghavan’s first film, but delays meant he first worked as an assistant director in the team of their coming-of-age film Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002).

Later, he met his mentor Gautham Vasudev Menon (or GVM) and extensively worked on the blockbusters, namely Kaakha Kaakha (2003) starring Suriya and Jyothika, and Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu starring Kamal Haasan and Jyothika (2006).

After being trained as an assistant director for over a decade, Thirumeni made his directorial debut in 2010 with the romantic comedy Mundhinam Paartheney, featuring a cast of newcomers.

Thadaiyara Thaakka and the Adult-Only Certification.

Thirumeni is one of the socially responsible directors when it comes to presenting a film. His second directorial, Thadaiyara Thaakka (2012), with Arun Vijay and Mamta Mohandas, received an adult-only certification and was a sleeper hit. Thirumeni revealed that the film would have done better with a wider release and more publicity. He stated that the “adults only” censor certificate meant that the film could not stay in the cinema halls for a long period of time. However, the film received cult status after getting released on YouTube.

Exploring The Action-Thriller Genre

He then created Meaghamann (2014), with Arya and Hansika Motwani. He once again collaborated with actor Arun Vijay for his next of the genre, Thadam, in 2019. The film, which received positive reviews from critics and audiences, is still considered one of the best films in Arun Vijay’s career.

He then made his next action thriller with actor-turned-politician Udhaynidhi Stalin, titled Kalaga Thalaivan (2022), and received praise for its making and execution.

Vidaamuyarchi: Perseverance Triumphs

The director, who did commercial action films, is now launching his mass action film, Vidaamuyarchi, with Ajith Kumar. By taking a unique approach that sets the film apart from his usual directorial style, Thirumeni has created a larger-than-life character that conveys a social message. As per the director, the film would not be a commercial film but a mass action film, which shows Ajith in a never-seen-before avatar.
