“10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides…” begins the official teaser of the much-anticipated TV prequel, Dune: Prophecy, to the Dune movies. The streaming service Max has dropped the teaser for the series, which will narrate the story of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, the powerful order of women. The series also stars Indian acting marvel Tabu in a key role.

Led by the Harkonnen siblings, played by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, the story of the sisterhood is carried on by Rebecca Ferguson and Charlottle Rampling, members of the sect, in the movies. The story is inspired by the gripping novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert, son of Frank Herbert (the original author of the Dune novels).

The series follows the story of the sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen as they fight the forces threatening humanity and establish the mystical sect known as the Bene Gesserit Order, or the Sisterhood, or simply Bene Gesserit.

The series comes right behind the release of the sequel in the Dune franchise by Denis Villeneuve, who was originally set to direct the pilot but dropped out later. On the topic of the prequel series, Villeneuve said, “The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me. Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but also a dynamic setting for the television series.”

While in 2019, the show was originally called Dune: The Sisterhood, the show underwent various changes in terms of writers and actors before it finally became Dune: Prophecy.

The ensemble cast also includes Mark Strong, Jodhi May, Travis Fimmel, Olivia Williams, and more. According to Variety, actress Tabu will essay the role of Sister Francesca, whose arrival is expected to imbalance the power dynamics in the capital.

Known for Outlander and Underworld: Blood Wars, Anna Foerster serves as an executive producer and has also directed several episodes of the show. Brian Herbert, Jordan Goldberg, Mark Tobey, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, and others comprise the executive production team. Co-author Kevin Anderson, is the co-producer.

Dune: Prophecy is expected to release later this year.
