Musician and actor Sting has expressed his keen interest in working with A. R. Rahman. During an interview with Rollings Stone India, the 72-year-old musician said that he was going to have a meeting with Rahman, but could not as the latter could not make it. He said, “I was gonna have a meeting last night with A R Rahman, but he got stuck in an airport somewhere. So it didn’t happen,”.
However, the ‘Desert Rose’ hitmaker said he will eventually meet A R Rahman. He stated that, “We’ll meet eventually, and we’ll discuss a collaboration, perhaps”.
The English musician first visited India in 1980 with The Police bandmates Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. When asked about his experience during the first visit to India, Sting said that he was undergoing to “cultural shock”.
He said, “it was so different to where I come from. I am from the north of England, you know, it’s very grey. It’s very industrial. Mumbai in 1980 was very different city to what it is now, there were no high rises”.
Sting recalled that his team were the first rock band to Mumbai. He said, “Everybody was enthusiastic and yelling and screaming and [it was] very exciting. I’ll never forget it. It was such a vivid memory, and I longed to come back”.
He also shared that he had visited India several times outside of work. He said he have a good perspective on India, “its complexity, its contradictions and I love it. I find it very stimulating.”
The star shared how he went trekking on Himalayas, his trips to Gangotri, Yamunotri, and walk to Hrishikesh. He said he slept with pilgrims by the roadside and slept in places of the Maharajas.
