Legendary music director and Academy award winner AR Rahman on Wednesday send Rs 10 crore legal notice to the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) on defamation. The legal note rejects all the allegations made by the ASI on a cancelled 2018 Rahman concert, arranged by the doctor’s association.
Mr Rahman in the defamation notice also sought a public apology from the part of ASI along with the sum of Rs 10 crore for defaming him.
“Your clients are hereby called upon to recall the notice dated October 3, 2023 within three days from today. You are also hereby called upon to issue a public apology immediately, prominently publicised for defaming my client”, said Mr Rahman’s legal counsel Narmadha Sampath in the legal notice send to ASI.
Mr Rahman was about to perform in the 78th annual conference of the ASI in 2018 but was cancelled last minute as the Tamil Nadu government refused to give permission for the program. The organisers had paid the musical director a sum of Rs 29.50 lakh, reported Times of India, as an advance, which he did not return.
ASI registered a complaint against Mr Rahman on September 27, for fraud at the Police Commissioners office in Chennai.
Ms Sampath on her reply alleged that the association is acting such for cheap publicity and Mr Rahman had never entered any contractual obligation.
The notice demands a public apology and Rs 10 crore in defamation within 15 days. Mr Rahman and his “Marakkuma Nenjam” sparked controversy in recent times also. The concert which was held in Chennai in September earned severe criticism from the fans after poor management and coordination. People who have booked tickets for the show were left angry and disappointed after the organizers failed to lay out proper seating arrangements and music systems.
