Here Are Five Things You Probably Don't Know About Megastar Mammootty’s 'Kalamkaval'
The Malayalam film industry is turning its attention to the much-anticipated crime thriller Kalamkaval, directed by debutant filmmaker Jithin K. Jose.
Backed by the Mammootty Kampany and headlined by Malayalam cinema icon Mammootty alongside powerhouse performer Vinayakan, the film has already generated significant curiosity among audiences.
Originally scheduled for a late-November premiere, the film will now hit theatres on December 5, 2025, setting the stage for a major international box-office face-off with the big-budget entertainer Dhurandhar.
Here are 5 Five Things You Probably Don’t Know About Kalamkaval
1. The director has a Kurup connection
Before making his directorial debut, Jithin K. Jose worked in the writing department of Kurup, the mammoth Dulquer Salmaan biographical thriller. His experience on that project is said to have shaped the narrative structure and research-driven detailing seen in Kalamkaval.
2. It is Mammootty Kampany’s seventh production
The film marks the seventh venture under Mammootty’s home banner. The production house, known for backing fresh ideas and new voices, continues this pattern by launching a new director with a strong crime narrative.

3. The film finished shooting way back in 2024
Though it is releasing in December 2025, Kalamkaval wrapped up filming in November 2024. The team reportedly spent the following months refining the film through extensive post-production work to ensure a polished final cut.
4. It has a rare UA 16+ certification
The CBFC’s UA 16+ certificate is relatively uncommon in Malayalam cinema. This indicates gritty themes, heightened tension, and mature content, while still keeping the film accessible to a wide audience.
5. It features one of the shortest Malayalam soundtrack albums
With just one track, the song “Nilaa Kaayum” running for 1 minute 52 seconds, the film’s soundtrack is unusually minimalistic. The makers have opted for a subtle musical approach, relying more on atmospheric scoring than traditional song sequences.
