Perhaps the most anticipated South Indian film of the year, Kanguva, starring Suriya and Bobby Deol, hit the theaters yesterday. Even though the extravagant production and the impressive visual effects amazed the audience, Kanguva partially failed to connect its story to the audience. With a mixed sack of reactions, day one of the mighty saga was filled with the discussion of whether it’s a hit or miss.

Creating history as Suriya’s career’s best opening, Kanguva has earned Rs 22 crore in India on its day one. Thus, the film emerged as the third highest opening Tamil film of the year. And the first two places were occupied by Thalapathy Vijay’s GOAT and Superstar Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, with Rs 44 crore and Rs 37 crore, respectively. The fourth place was secured by the latest release of actor Sivakarthikeyan, Amaran, which collected Rs 21.4 crore on its day one.
Kanguva had an overall theatrical occupancy of 37.25 percent across its Tamil 2D shows and 49.89 percent across the Tamil 3D shows. Its Hindi 3D, Hindi 2D, Telugu 2D, and Telugu 3D logged a theatrical occupancy of 11.47 percent, 58.12 percent, 12.64 percent, and 39.28 percent, respectively.
The film’s Kannada 2D shows logged an overall theatrical occupancy of 15.49 percent. Its Malayalam 2D shows logged a theatrical occupancy of 21.78 percent, as per film trade portal Sacnilk.
