Suriya and director Karthik Subbaraj’s action entertainer, Retro, is one of the highly anticipated films in the Tamil film industry. As an innovative approach, the makers have dropped a comic series to introduce the magicians, aka the technicians working behind the camera, to bring life to Retro.
Produced by Stone Bench Films and Suriya’s 2D Entertainment, the film boasts a stellar cast, including Suriya, Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Shreya Saran, and others on board. Retro will hit theatres on May 1.

Presenting some funny and memorable moments from the sets of Karthik Subbaraj’s directorial, the production houses Suriya’s 2D Entertainment and Stone Bench Films aimed to bring the spotlight on its technicians, who remained far from the limelight. The last comic strip is titled EPI:010 Offscreen Magicians of RETRO!. So, let’s meet the magicians behind Suriya’s Retro.
Jackie: The Set Magician
Jackie, the art director, is the set magician of Karthik Subbaraj’s Retro. About his commitment to his craft, the makers wrote, “ Jackie doesn’t just build sets; he creates whole new worlds. Even when the director says it’s enough, Jackie keeps adding more. He puts in double the effort & makes every frame look rich and beautiful. He is the star behind the art direction.”
Sherif: The Dance Wizard
Dance master Sherif is the wizard behind the hook step “Kanimaa” which is currently trending on social media. About Jackie Master’s commitment, the makers wrote, “The Kanima hook step was not just a dance move; it felt like a magic spell that reached across the world. Sherif Master doesn’t just teach dance steps; he brings magic to the stage. Everyone started dancing without even realizing it.”
Mayapandi: The Production Designer
Meet Mayapandi, the production designer who brings life to Karthik’s imaginations. About his talent, the makers wrote, “He speaks softly but works with great power. Pravin: The Style Illusionist

Editor Shafique Mohamed Ali is the one who brings the world of Retro together. Referring to him as an “Edit Wizard,” the makers wrote, “He is quick like scissors & fast like lightning, perfectly & brings magic to the screen. He works with full focus and makes sure everything flows smoothly.
Tuney John—The Poster Magician
Designer Tuney John is the man behind the uber cool vintage-style posters of Retro. About his dedication, the makers wrote, “The first magic of RETRO began with his posters. They were full of color, bold, & instantly grabbed attention. He created the movie’s look even before it reached the screen and he continues to bring that magic with every new poster.”
Santhosh Narayanan: The Music Composer
Music composer Santhosh Narayanan is a significant pillar of Suriya’s Retro. The songs of Retro Kannadi Poove, Kanimaa and The One have gone viral on the internet and still continue to create waves among the audience. Notably, Santhosh Narayanan also has made a special appearance in the songs Kanimaa and The One.
