Remove The Objectionable Content, Or Face Criminal Action: AR Rahman’s Legal Team

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has issued a stern legal notice through his counsel, addressing defamatory and speculative content circulating on social media following the announcement of his separation from his wife, Saira Banu. The notice, drafted by Narmadha Sampath Associates & Advocates, warns individuals and platforms against publishing baseless and objectionable material about Rahman and his family.

The notice emphasises that while Rahman and Saira announced their separation citing emotional strain, certain individuals and online platforms have taken to spreading false and malicious narratives about their private lives. These actions, Rahman’s counsel argues, are driven by the desire for sensationalism and publicity at the expense of the couple’s dignity and privacy.

Rahman’s legal team highlighted that such content breaches ethical norms and violates guidelines set by social media platforms against harassment and abusive material. The notice demands that all objectionable content be removed within 24 hours, failing which criminal defamation cases will be pursued under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which prescribes penalties of up to two years of imprisonment. Additionally, Rahman has signalled his intent to file civil defamation suits and seek prior restraint orders against further publication of defamatory material.

The separation of AR Rahman and Saira Banu marks the end of a 29-year-long marriage. The couple, who wed in 1995 in an arranged union, have three children together—Khatija, Rahima, and Ameen. Saira Banu released a statement acknowledging the decision, attributing it to significant emotional strain in their relationship. She requested privacy and understanding during this challenging time.

Known for his musical genius and deep spirituality, Rahman has often credited his marriage to Saira as a pivotal aspect of his personal life. The couple shared a strong spiritual bond rooted in their Islamic faith, which Rahman has frequently highlighted as a source of strength in navigating life’s highs and lows.
