Even though Retro’s trailer and teaser suggest a high-octane action thriller, the Pizza director’s film is a complete love story. Yes, as Subbaraj states, even though the film includes the concepts of violence, promise, rowdyism, and hooliganism, Retro intends to offer a Karthik Subbaraj-style love story.
Kanimaa: The 15-minute Single Shot
Kanimaa, the vibrant song composed by music director Santhosh Narayanan, is not just a song but a 15-minute continuous shot that narrates the deeper layers of the film. This particular shot is a diverse combination of song, dance, fights, emotions, arguments, and especially romance. Moreover, it will also offer a different experience by featuring the entire cast dancing, fighting, and conversing.
Retro’s Message on “Thammam—the Purpose of Life”
In a wider perspective, Suriya’s Retro talks about the “thammam,” the purpose of life. With a diverse combination of love, action, thriller and others, the core of the film highlights the idea of the purpose of life. Suriya also expressed his hopes for the film, saying that it will help the audience find their own purpose.
Suriya’s Special Message
Another factor that created discussion among the audience and especially Suriya fans was the cigarette-smoking scene in the trailer. Suriya, who has always maintained a no-smoking scene policy since the beginning of his career, has broken his own rule for Retro.
About the scene, Suriya clarified that he had used cigarettes only for the film and revealed that he doesn’t smoke in real life. Clarifying that he won’t endorse such activities, the actor also advised his fans, “I have used cigarettes only for the well-being of Retro; don’t smoke in your real life. Even if you start with a single puff, it will never let you go. I will not endorse that.”
The Stellar Cast of Retro
Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Retro boasts a stellar cast including Suriya, Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Shreya Saran, and others on board. While the vibrant music scores were composed by music director Santhosh Narayanan, the editing was handled by Shafiq.
