Abishan’s journey: From short films to silver screen

The young director has already caught enough attention among the audience. Abishan started his journey as a YouTuber. His exposure to the world of entertainment began with his YouTube channel, Thug Lightu.

He has been an avid short film director since his school days and eventually began writing scripts. Starting off with random videos about friendship, exams, love and others, Abishan began his directorial journey in 2019 with a short film titled DOPE.

After a year, his passion for storytelling and cinema pushed him to make his second short film, Nodigal Pirakatha, which gained great reception from the audience. The short film, premiered in February 2020, has gained more than 2 million views on YouTube so far.

Tourist Family: His Directorial Debut

Having not assisted anyone previously, Abishan took the extreme step of entering into the world of cinema with his debut film, Tourist Family.

Even though he had another script okayed by a production house during his college final year, the plan never took off due to the COVID-19 induced pandemic and other related issues. But life had different plans for Abishan to begin his journey.

Thenali: The inspiration

Inspired by Kamal Haasan’s 2000-released comedy entertainer, Thenali, Abishan has now sculpted a hilarious emotional story. “Tourist Family will make you cry, not out of sorrow but out of joy, all the while being humorous,” he said while promoting his film.

Introducing the film’s backdrop, the director said, “Tourist Family is devoid of the politics of Tamils in the neighboring country. In fact, the time period we are focusing on is the Sri Lankan economic crisis post-Covid, which has nothing to do with the country’s civil war. The film is about the Tamil family fleeing the nation due to the economic tailspin”.

Tourist Family: A story of immigrants

About the origin of the film’s story, the director said that they researched the issue only to the extent of its utility to our script. Abishan wanted the film to be as apolitical as possible. Intending to bring a freshness to the story, he opted for a vintage Simran vibe with a pookie Sasikumar style. As per the director, the film will also talk about displacement and immigrants with a blend of emotion and humor with it.

With a fresh teaser, the filmmaker also completed his mission to connect the characters with the audience. So, as the film releases tomorrow, May 1, let’s wait and watch whether the magic of director Abishan wins hearts.
