Will Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' Compete In Oscars?

The Oscar nominations of India is making headlines for over a month. With Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies selected for India’s entry to the Oscars, will the other acclaimed film of the country All We Imagine As Light make an Independent entry to the Academy Awards?

Payal Kapadia, the filmmaker, who made the whole country turn by the Cannes win for her directorial All We Imagine As Light, in her recent interview shared what Oscar validation means to her. As the Cannes recognition gave so much attention to the film in the country, the filmmaker said that it gave distribution to the film.

When asked if she plans to enter the Oscar race as an independent entry, Payal replied, “Will we send the film independently? It’s not really in my hands.” Highlighting the film’s release in India and US next month, the filmmaker said that the team would see how people respond to it.

About the entry of Laapataa Ladies to the Oscars, Payal said that she was happy about the film’s entry and added that it’s such a fun, wonderful movie and was happy about it. She also also loved Kiran Rao’s previous film Dhobhi Ghat.

Moreover, scripting another history, the film is making its entry to this year’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA). The film received a nod for the top honour in the best film and best director category. Actress Kani Kusruti was nominated for best performance, and lensman Ranabir Das for best cinematography.

The film, which reached the Kerala theaters on September 21, is also set to be served as the opening film of the festival. The MAMI Festival, which will run from 19 to 24 October, features a lineup of critically acclaimed films, culminating with Sean Baker’s Anora as the closing film.
