Red Alert In Kerala, As Four Dead In Non-Stop Torrential Rain

Kerala is pouring down hard. The state authority issued red alert in several districts after torrential rain continued. The State”s Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said that four people were killed in various part due to the heavy rain incidents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red alert several districts on May 23, Thursday.

Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Ernakulam are in Red alert, and Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are placed under Orange alert. Kannur and Kasaragod remain on Yellow alert.

It is to note that, a Red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rain of over 20 cm in 24 hours, and an Orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm. A Yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.

Rain continued to pour down non-stop starting from Wednesday evening. The IMD said “a cyclonic circulation lies over south Kerala in lower & middle tropospheric levels”. The department said the prevailing atmospheric conditions are set to influence the weather condition in the Sate.

The weather bulletin adds, “Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Coastal & South Interior Karnataka on 22nd & 23rd; Lakshadweep on 23rd; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on 24th; Kerala on 24th & 25th May, 2024″.

The KSDMA warned fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea until further updates. The authorities have forecasted high waves ranging from 0.4 to 3.3 meters and sea incursions along the Kerala coast from Vizhinjam in the south to Kasaragod in the north. It is expected to last until Thursday night.

Kerala”s Health Minister, Veena George said that a state control room has been opened in the Health Department Directorate due to the continued down pour.
