Known for its delectable blend of soft cheese and aromatic syrup, India”s Ras Malai has clinched the second spot in Taste Atlas” prestigious list of the ‘10 Best Cheese Desserts’ globally.

Popular food guide Taste Atlas disclosed its ’10 Best Cheese Desserts’ in the World list recently. The top-ranking dessert on the list was Sernik from Poland, a delectable cheesecake prepared with eggs, sugar, and twarog, a type of curd cheese. Often served on a crumbly cake base, Sernik can be enjoyed baked or unbaked. According to Taste Atlas, the most relished varieties of the dish include a sponge cake as its base, covered with jelly and fruits as toppings.

The cherished Indian dish, originating from West Bengal, holds a special place in Indian cuisine, with its name derived from “ras” meaning juice and “malai” signifying cream. This sumptuous dessert is delicately crafted using “chhena,” a soft fresh cheese made from milk, lemon juice, and water. The process involves cooking the chhena in a rich sugar syrup before immersing it in “rabdi,” a sweet milk syrup infused with cardamom and adorned with chopped almonds and pistachios.

Ras Malai is best savoured chilled, making it a popular choice during festive celebrations like Holi, Diwali, and Durga Puja.

Following Ras Malai, the third-ranking dessert comes from Greece. A traditional pie, Sfakianopita, is enjoyed with a drizzle of thyme honey and sesame seeds, cinnamon, and slivers of almonds as other toppings. The sweet and savoury pie is believed to have been invented by Cretan shepherds from a region called Sfakia, giving it the name Sfakianopita.

Other desserts on the top ten list include New York-style cheesecake (USA), Japanese cheesecake (Japan), Basque cheesecake (Spain), Rakoczi turos (Hungary), Melopita (Greece), Kasekuchen (Germany), and Misa Rezy (Czech Republic).
