With extreme dietary practices and weight training, Russian bodybuilder Illia ‘Golem’ Yefimchyk became an iconic star among youth, projecting his transformation story and videos through social media. Though not a professionally competing bodybuilder, he rose to fame as one who pushed the boundaries of human power by lifting unimaginable weights and gaining huge chests and biceps.

After suffering a heart attack at home on September 6, Yefimchyk died at the hospital on September 11 at the age of 36, raising questions about the fallout of extreme bodybuilding trends among youths.

The monstrous bodybuilder, known as ‘The Mutant,’ consumed 16,500 calories, including 108 pieces of sushi and nearly 6 lbs of steak and did bench-pressing 600 lbs, and deadlifting and squatting 700 lbs. Yefimchyk boasted a 61-inch chest and 25-inch biceps, which began from not even being able to perform one single pushup, heralding an inspirational transformation.

The bodybuilder had earlier said his mission was to instill a work ethic in people so they can overcome their fears while gaining confident towards the betterment of themselves and those around them. The body builder’s transformation was a result of years of hard training and discipline, paired with an understanding of exercise physiology and nutrition, as per one of his earlier statement.

Yefimchyk was inspired by a schoolteacher to start bodybuilding and also by the physiques of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. The iconic bodybuilder left the world before achieving his goal of reaching 380 lbs.

The death of Yefimchyk calls for serious introspection of extreme weight training. Last month, 26-year-old bodybuilder Antônio Souza, who had been training since the age of 15, died after undergoing a strong cardiac arrest. In April this year, Britain’s bodybuilder Neil Currey collapsed reportedly due to a lethal mix of drugs that the parents blamed on steroids.
