The new variant of COVID-19, JN.1 has seen an increase in the country, with 69 new cases reported till 25 December, ANI reported citing the official sources.
With the highest number of reported cases of the JN.1, Karnataka saw 34 cases, while Goa registered 14 cases. Maharashtra and Kerala followed, with 9 and 6 cases of the JN.1 variant respectively. In addition, Tamil Nadu reported 4 and Telangana 2.
However, reports on the new variant confirmed that most of those infected with the new variant are in home isolation, with no rise in the hospitalization rate. In view of the rising concern about the new variant and the total COVID cases, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare last week directed the state governments to work according to the operational guidelines of the revised COVID-19 surveillance strategy. Experts however instruct people with comorbidities to take extra care while dealing with the Covid.
The new variant aside, India saw 412 fresh COVID cases, with Karnataka recording three deaths and reaching the 4,170 active tally. Till now, India”s Covid cases stand at 4,50,09,660, while the recovery rate is projected to be 98.81 per cent, according to the ministry. The death to Covid was 1.19 per cent.
The Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant has stressed the urgency to take countermeasures to curb the spread in the wake of the festive season. He also urged the state governments to comply with the outline provided by the union health ministry and asked to conduct proper monitoring and reporting of the Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases.
